According to media reports, Toriyama was a big fan of Jackie Chan, and had repeatedly stated in interviews that without Drunken Master, a Hong Kong kung fu comedy film starring Jackie Chan, there would be no Dragon Ball.

Several famous manga artists in Japan also mourned Toriyama’s passing, including Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the series One Piece.

Toriyama’s masterpiece Dragon Ball draws on the story of Chinese classic Journey to the West as its background.
