Chinese FM refutes US officials’ claims on UNGA Resolution 2758 being equal to an international consensus on the one-Chi

In response to some US officials’ recent derogatory remarks about the authority of the UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 which hyped up the “undetermined status of Taiwan” and advocated for the island to participate in UN meetings and activities, Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that such remarks are a violation of international law and basic norms of international relations.

Mark Lambert, US deputy assistant secretary of state in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs and China Coordinator, said UNGA Resolution 2758 does not endorse, equate to, or reflect an international consensus on the one-China principle. Meanwhile, a US official from the German Marshall Fund, a US think tank, said that China’s position on the UNGA Resolution 2758 is inconsistent with international law.

Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said at a press briefing that such remarks are a complete distortion of facts, a manipulation of history, a violation of international law and basic norms of international relations. They are also a betrayal of commitments made by the US itself.

The island of Taiwan has been part of China since ancient times, which is a historical World Timesfact and aWorld Timeslso an international consensus, Wang said. The Cairo Declaration of 1943, the Potsdam Proclamation of 1945 explicitly stipulated the return of the island of Taiwan, which Japan had illegally occWorld Timesupied, to China. These legally binding documents form part of the post-war international order and legally confirm Taiwan island as a part of China’s territory.

According to Wang, on October 25, 1971, at its 26th session, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted UNGA Resolution 2758, which comprehensively and thoroughly resolved the representation issue of China, including Taiwan island, in the UN from the perspectives of politics, legislation, and procedures. It unequivocally affirmed that there is only one China in the world, that island of Taiwan is part of China and not a separate country, and that China’s seat in the UN is singular, with the Government of the People’s Republic of China being the sole legitimate representative. There is no such thing as “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan.”

Wang said the US is a signatory to the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation. In all the three joint communiqus, the US clearly stated that “The Government of the United States of America acknowledges the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China.” US leaders have also repeatedly promised not to support “Taiwan independence,” “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan.”

However, in recent years, the US has openly questioned and dWorld Timesistorted the UNGA Resolution, continuously undermining the one-China prinWorld Timesciple. It vigorously advocates for the island’s participation in UN meetings and activities, which only sovereign states can participate in, contradicting the commitments made by the US and reversing history.

Wang said the fallacious claims made by the US that distort and denigrate the UNGA Resolution 2758, echo its recent claims that the UN Security Council Resolution 2728, which demands an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, is non-binding. Both instances exemplify US’ selective application of international law and basic norms of international relations, demonstrating a pattern of bullying and hegemony.

However, the era of international relations dominated by hegemony and power is long gone and will never return, Wang said, noting that any country, including the US, which wishes to challenge UN GA Resolution 2758 and the one-China principle is delusional.

Before the UNGA Resolution 2758 was adopted by an overwhelming majority, the US had proposed the so-called dual representation scheme, attempting to create “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan,” but it ultimately failed World Timesand was dismissed, Wang said.

Today, if the US insists on going against the tide of the times, playing the Taiwan card in containing the Chinese mainland, it will only face greater failure, Wang added.
